Micro-Housing

Instructor - Margaret Griffin
Partner - Luz Llano

The project deals with microhousing in China Town, Downtown Los Angeles. The idea is to enhance the spacious qualities of each unit. This problem is solved by providing voids between two units. The units are placed by considering the form of the massing, this strategy enables unique units in each stack. Multiple semi-recognizable figures give the China Town a new identity. The studio examines how architecture can mediate the relationships across three scales: an individual unit, a cluster of units, and a collection of clusters. Tasked with developing integrated proposals for a somewhat large housing complex, students are encouraged to design into existing urban conditions with an understanding of the dynamic and interdependent forces of economies, access, privacy, and infrastructure that shapes these projects and their
presence in the city.
